The Research Units hosted in the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University NOVA of Lisbon (FCT NOVA) - UCIBIO, LAQV and MEtRICs - are essential for the development of scientific research in the area of chemistry. These Research Units rely on researchers and high tech equipment to develop their projects.
The UCIBIO (Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit) was created in a collaboration of FCT NOVA with the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto. The group focuses its activity in the areas of Chemistry, Biology and Engineering, aiming to understand important issues at the atomic, molecular, subcellular and cellular levels, including interactions between cells.
The LAQV (Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry) is a research group that brings together more than 1000 researchers from various parts of the country, such as Lisbon, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra and Évora. It aims to promote the principles of Sustainable Chemistry, through the development of chemical processes that are environmentally sustainable and economically viable, acting in areas such as Chemical Synthesis and Catalysis, Food Science and Technology, Natural Products, Clean Processes and Technologies, Alternative Solvents, and Smart Materials.
Created in 2013, MEtRICs (Mechanical Engineering and Resource Sustainability Center) emerged in the merger of two units: in part the Center for Mechanics and Materials Technologies - CT2M, of the University of Minho (UMinho) - and Environmental Biotechnology Unit - UBiA, of the New University of Lisbon (UNova). Its mission is to create scientific knowledge and provide technical solutions for a cleaner, safer and sustainable world. It aims to contribute to the social and economic benefits that come with a knowledge-based economy.
