Portuguese secondary school students won, for the first time, a gold medal at the Science Olympics of the European Union (EUSO). EUSO was held in Tartu, Estonia, from 7 to 14 May and gathered students from 23 European countries. The EUSO is a team competition for sixteen year old secondary school students who are interested in science.
The Minister for Education, Tiago Brandão Rodrigues, acknowledge “the work done by the organizers that allowed the Portuguese participation at the EUSO” supported by Direcção-Geral da Educação, Portuguese Physics Society, the Portuguese Chemistry Society, Ordem dos Biólogos, Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária and Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (FCT-NOVA).
The EUSO winner Portuguese team did their final preparation for the Science Olympics at the laboratories of the Chemistry Department, Life Sciences Department and Physics Department of FCT-NOVA, under the supervision of Célia Henriques, professor at the Physics Department, and João Carlos Lima and Eurico Cabrita, both professors at the Chemistry Department. It is a highlight for Portugal and, specifically, to the only Portuguese faculty involved.
