Ana Aguiar Ricardo, President of the Chemistry Department at FCT NOVA and Full Professor, was elected the new President of the EuChemS Division of Green and Sustainable Chemistry (DGSC).
EuChemS, the European Chemical Society, is an umbrella organisation representing national Chemical Societies and other chemistry-related organisations in Europe. EuChemS aims to nurture a platform for scientific discussion and to provide a single, unbiased European voice on key policy issues in chemistry and related fields.
“I am very honoured to be elected as President of the EuCheMS DGSC. I am totally committed to strength the interactions between chemists and engineers across industry and academia to make Green Chemistry an important tool for achieving a sustainable development", says Ana Aguiar Ricardo.
“The EuCheMS DGSC aims to strenght the interactions of chemists and engineers right across the discipline in both industry and academia so that, together, we can identify and overcome potential to the implementation of “Green Chemistry” techniques and alternative synthetic pathways throughout the chemical and biochemical industries”, highlights Ana Aguiar Ricardo.
About Ana Aguiar Ricardo
Ana Aguiar-Ricardo is a Chemical Engineer with expertise in the field of green chemistry and supercritical fluid technology targeting (bio)polymer synthesis and processing. Her primary research focus is evolving new functional polymeric (bio)materials with higher performance for defined clinical and pharmaceutical applications as well as (bio)separation processes.
She graduated in Chemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and obtained a PhD from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT-UNL, 1994) under the supervision of Prof. M. Nunes da Ponte.
She did post-doctoral work at University of Nottingham, UK (1995), in the laboratory of Prof M. Poliakoff. She held a visiting position at Hammond’s Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA, July-December 2007). In 2011, she was appointed with the Habilitation in Sustainable Chemistry.
Currently, she is Full Professor and Diretor of the Department of Chemistry (DQ), FCT-UNL, a NOVA Faculty member of Bio-Engineering Systems in the MIT-Portugal Program (MPP), member of scientific board of Doctoral Program in Sustainable Chemistry, member of the scientific board of LAQV-REQUIMTE.
Since 2013, she was appointed representative of Sociedade Portuguesa de Química in the European Association for Chemical and Molecular sciences (EuCheMS) Working Party on Green and Sustainable Chemistry (Jan 2013until September 2015) and at IUPAC – Chemistry and the Environment Division (2014-2015) and former member of the Supervisory Board of FCT-UNL (2013-2017). Since 2015, she is member of the Steering Committee of the Division on Green and Sustainable Chemistry of EuCheMS.
