From the 1st to the 3rd of July, the CryoEM@NOVA and the Macromolecular Crystallography groups co-organized an international summer school and hands-on course: “1st CryoEM-X-ray Crystallography Synergy hands-on workshop”.
In this comprehensive 3-day workshop, 10 selected participants (5 national, 2 from the UK, 1 from Germany, 1 from Spain, and 1 from Poland) delved into the fundamentals and advanced techniques of these cutting-edge structural biology methods. Hartmut Luecke, Ana Luísa Carvalho, Teresa Santos Silva and Cristiano Mota were present as tutors of the event, and 3 international experts in CryoEM were invited: Herbert Nar (Director Structural Research, Boehringer Ingelheim); Eva Cunha (Head of the CryoEM Department at Proteros) and Michael Adams (CryoEM Application Specialist, Thermo Fisher Scientific)
Participants had the opportunity to discuss with experts about recent advancements in CryoEM and Crystallography, as well as the future trends that are shaping the field.
Training included a hands-on in CryoEM sample preparation and vitrification robot, intro to CryoEM image data processing, fitting atomic models in CryoEM density maps and X-ray diffraction, indexing, integration and scaling and 3D structure solution by MR methods.
