The Department of Chemistry at NOVA FCT will host the Safety Course in Chemistry Laboratories. The course will take place on 8th January 2025, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, in Room 217D - DQ.
The course aims to prepare students, researchers, professors, and technicians to face the challenges and responsibilities inherent to laboratory work, ensuring safe and efficient practices.
The Safety Course will be tailored to the specific context of the Department of Chemistry. This training does not cover the safety of biological agents.
This course is mandatory for master's and doctoral students.
Course Summary:
• Introduction and objectives.
• Industrial accidents.
• Heavy metals and environmental contamination.
• Accidents in chemistry laboratories: Types of victims.
• Emergencies in chemistry laboratories – Internal emergency plans and responses to emergencies: fire, spills, earthquakes, bomb threats.
• Hazards of chemical substances.
• REACH system, classification, and labeling of hazardous chemical products, and safety data sheets.
• Personal protective equipment.
• Working with gases.
• Handling cryogenic liquids.
• Working under non-atmospheric pressure: high pressure and low pressure.
• Proper storage of chemical compounds and incompatibilities.
• Collection and treatment of hazardous waste.
Registration is mandatory.
